According to Google data analysis, the optical module market demand will reach 4.9 billion US dollars by 2021

Release Date: Sep 16,2022

  QSFP-40G-SR4

The market research company recently released the report "Optical Modules and DWDM Optical Devices for Data Center Interconnection", which reviewed the growth of this market from 2010 to 2014, and looked forward to the growth of this market in 2015 to 2021.

The analysis pointed out that Google's purchase of 10GbE SFP+ optical modules first started in 2007, and the real market grew during 2010-2014. More than 40 million 10GbE SFP+ modules have been sold in the past five years, half of which are used in data centers. Sales of 40GbE modules started in 2013 and are expected to exceed 2.5 million in 2015, with more than 75% sold to Web 2.0 companies. LightCounting predicts that the demand for 40GbE and 10GbE modules will remain strong in the next five years, but the application of 100GbE modules in the data center market is even more exciting.

Previous forecasts have used the correlation between optical connection bandwidth and Internet traffic. But this approach has encountered difficulties in forecasting the module market for 2010-2014. This time, the entire optical module market is divided into three markets: large-scale data centers, telecom and enterprise networks, and forecasts are made for the application bandwidth/traffic correlation of different markets. For the data center optical module market, it is also necessary to refer to the traffic inside the data center for forecasting. The latest data provided by Google Inc. just provides help for the forecast. Google's data shows that the traffic inside the data center has increased by 50 times in the past seven years, with an average annual growth rate of 75%, but the traffic growth rate in 2014 decreased from 80% in 2012 to 50%. Lightcounting believes this shows that the growth in data traffic is converging, with an upper limit. Based on this, it is predicted that the market growth rate of optical modules for data centers will drop from 50% in 2015 to less than 30% in 2020. The overall market is expected to reach $4.9 billion by 2021, up from $1.6 billion in 2014. Sales in 2019 will exceed 50 million. The purchase of large data centers will account for 30%, and by 2021, it will account for 50%. During the same period, 100G/400G DWDM ports will account for 20% of the market in 2021, and only 10% in 2014.
